This rarely trodden route starts from the northwestern part of Mt Kenya. The climate and vegetation is savannah type and as you hike you will invariably see herds of zebra, eland and gazelles on the lower part of the mountain.
Itinerary
We will reach at Ol pejeta around 10 am. We will do a game drive with our lunch boxes as we await the 3pm session to feed the chimpanzees.
We will continue with the game drive in this private rhino and chimpanzee’s sanctuary till 5:30pm when we will leave to our place of stay in Nanyuki town.
After breakfast, we will drive to Sirimon gate where we will get our trekking tickets. Afterwards, we meet up with our crews for onward transfer to Timau. From the end of the forest line (3000m), we hike for 2-3 hours to Marania Camp (3700m).
We will have our hot lunch and then spend the rest of the day exploring the area around the camp.
We will have our delicious meal freshly prepared by our chef just before we retire in out tents for the night.
After breakfast and breaking down the camp, we will start a 7-hour trek across gently rolling topography and Savanna type vegetation to Major's Camp (4000m) for overnight. Picnic lunch will be served on the way.
Having taken our heavy breakfast, we will start today's trek through the last section of the moorlands which will give way to the alpine desert. Our hike today is a 5-hour hike, with lunch break on the way, and we shall spend the night at Upper Simba Camp (4500m), for the dinner and overnight.
We will start the predawn summit attempt at 04:00am, hiking for two hours up to Pt. Lenana (4,985m), the hiker’s summit, arriving there in time to watch the African sunrise. From Pt. Lenana you have good views of Pt. Nelion (5188m), Pt. Batian (5199m) and other surrounding peaks, and on a clear day the summit of Kilimanjaro can be seen protruding from the blue sky over 340km to the south. From the summit we will descend back to Simba tarn campsite (4,500m) for breakfast.
After breakfast, begin a 2-hour descent L. Michelson camp (3900m). Afternoon spent exploring this spectacular camp.
Lunch and dinner will be served here in the camp.
We will descend down Chogoria gate where we will meet our driver and drive down to Chogoria village. After bidding farewell to the supporting crew, we drive back to Nairobi where the tour ends.
